Today I took a walk in the park. Breathed the air and stepped softly through broken branches. My phone was in my Burberry tote. Volume off but I knew it would be just a matter of time before I took it out to take pictures of the trees, the grass, the moss, and the birds. Hopefully the crows. Their attitude is awesome.
Try as I might I could not get away from pictures. What is social media but a series of pictures? Endless. Fascinating. I watch my friends shopping. Trying and buying beautiful pieces from beautiful places. The pieces are real but are the experiences? I don’t know. I feel happy for them. I LIKE them. It’s what you do.
My 3.1 Phillip Lim boots were made for walking. I found a house filled with pictures. Ones made by hand. Drawn onto paper. Not taken with a camera. It was fascinating moving through the rooms unbothered. Colour was everywhere. Stories to read in different languages about different people. A whole world. Thank you unlocked door.
A self-port in Self Portrait. Look at these faces. They do not stream. They are static. Fashion is never static. Season after season, collection after collection the pieces float down runways. Bringing joy, impulse, longing.
I couldn’t resist the urge any longer. I took out my phone and photographed everything. I tried to capture the essence of the images. The messages. The stories. It didn’t work. Pictures of pictures. Lost in translation. I sit and run the stories through my head. I close my eyes and lean into them. Designers have stories too. They are not just what they make. Phillip Lim is actually Pheng Lim. Born in Thailand. Living in the US. He has a lifetime of stories to tell through his fashion.
